During times of incredible upheaval and stress, the world needs more even-keeled, trustworthy leaders more than ever. It needs leaders who listen to (and believe in) science, who support all of their citizens no matter their beliefs, and who don't, you know, bully teenagers who've been victims of gun violence. Oh, Marjorie Taylor Greene. You're so... you.
The Old Farmer's Almanac remains a fantastic resource after centuries of use, and today it's online so you can even get emails featuring tips each week. Who could have predicted that one day the Old Farmer's Almanac would host webinars to help farmers learn more about their craft back in the 1800s? It's pretty amazing that it's stood the test of time this long and it reminds us how no matter what, we'll always need farming and food.
Recently we came into ownership of some old windows. Unfortunately they aren't the size we need for our own, which do need to be replaced, but they are still good quality windows, which means we'd like to do something with them. What that something is... we haven't decided.
August 12 is World Elephant Day, a time to not only celebrate these powerful creatures and learn about them, but take action to help protect them and their habitat. The U.N. report sounding the code red alarm on how dangerous climate change is definitely relates to helping elephants survive, as it does to any other beings on the planet--including ourselves.
We just discussed some of the YA books we're most looking forward to here at Real Book, and now Goodreads is hosting an entire YA Week! This is such an exciting event with all kinds of guides to help readers connect with new-to-them books, celebrate old favorites and find out what everyone is reading.
As an 80s kid, my favorite books of the time will always be the Sweet Pickles series--which were actually published in the late 1970s. Each book featured a different animal for every letter of the alphabet, and each animal learned some sort of lesson in the books. My favorite was Me Too, Iguana, who wanted to have everything everyone else had and had to realize that she was unique just as she was. It's good lesson for anyone!
Bones Coffee Company has exciting flavors year-round, and they never disappoint. Whether it's newer flavors like buttered rum Shark Bite or jelly donut From Dusk Til Dawn, or their classics like butterscotch Highland Grog or Salted Caramel, there is always a flavor for everyone. They even have a High Voltage blend for those who want a bit more caffeine.
Cryptid creatures have never been forgotten. Every generation has plenty of cryptid creature fans, and Bigfoot and Nessie and their cousins will never go out of style. That said, it seems as if they've had a strong sense of renewal lately, and my teen is all here for it.
It's August and the Halloween treats are already rolling out. The irony is not lost, but the fact that so many sell out so fast means that Halloween flavor lovers may have to jump on goodies as soon as they appear! There shouldn't be a shortage of pumpkin spice, given how popular it is (and how widely available various PSL products are), but what about other annual favorites?
While the United States has a plethora of vaccines and we need more people to get them, poor countries who want them have a shortage that we could definitely help with. Big Pharma monopolies are at the heart of the crisis, some of which are even raising their prices to render vaccines cost-prohibitive to nations that desperately need vaccines.
Spooky season comes faster every year, and Torrid just released some Horror film-inspired Halloween apparel that's sure to please many fans. There are short-sleeved shirts, sweaters, shorts, sleep tanks, hoodies and more in styles featuring favorite horror movie villains.
Cats in windows are some of the cutest, and sometimes funniest, things to see in a neighborhood. There is a hilarious TikTok video where the owner places a sign that reads, "Not Dead," next to their sleeping cat because the cat is at such an awkward angle in the window!
Birds are creative animals who will find a variety of nesting materials in their environments--even if those materials happen to be attached to a living creature! Many of us have seen videos of birds stealing fur from sleeping dogs, but now studies are showing that they will even go after an awake animal!
When Congress was breaking and leaving millions of people about to lose their homes as the eviction ban was set to expire, Cori Bush of St. Louis, Missouri's first Black Congresswoman, took her chair to the Capitol and refused to leave until an extension was made. Her actions, as usual, saved lives, and continued to prove that she's changing things from the inside out.
Trivia games are so much fun, and some of the best trivia questions involve actual photos, song clips and video snippets. These allow players to enjoy seeing and hearing the 80s references while still playing the game. It also helps set the mood for the game. The thing I miss most about in-person trivia is the name the song portion, for sure. Who doesn't love 80s music?
Now that August is here all hot and heavy, let's make some fun end-of-summer crafts! There are so many fun crafts to do at home, whether you want to make a cute window display or you have kids who feel like getting artsy. This list in particular has so many fun ideas.
There's just something about young adult literature. It doesn't spend endless time on a piece of brocade or churning butter like regular fantasy sometimes does, and it features themes that are often fairly universal. It's more exciting in many ways, and sometimes it's even faster to read. This month there are several highly sought-after books releasing, too.
Bachelorette parties vary person to person, but most involve at least some kind of game. Some bachelorette parties feature low-planning games, like sharing funny or favorite memories of the bride-to-be. But there are lots of fun board games made especially for bachelorette parties, too.
So many gardeners swear by their favorite tools when it comes to their gardening repertoire, and for the longest time it seemed a little like overkill to me. If you had your basics, you were fine, right? My hand trowel is my favorite tool, but I also have a large shovel and a rake, and that's pretty much all I need.
